Inspiration

When ordering food or paying the bill when going out to eat with friends and the group decides to split the bill, the job of figuring who ordered what almost always fell onto the person who paid the bill. This app allows the group to just scan the receipt and each person can go on and mark what they ordered and the amount they owed would be calculated. Payment would be held at the discretion of the friend group. Project was inspired by Suchwinder Singh and was worked on as a capstone project.

What I worked on

Most of my focus on the project was spent on integrating OCR using Pytesseract into the project. The objective of OCR was to lessen the work of transferring the information from a receipt to a spreadsheet. Integrating OCR included ensuring that the correct information was being recognized by Pytesseract, getting the information stored correcting into the database and implementing API calls so that OCR would be run when a receipt was uploaded by the end-user.

Other contributions:

• Implement API endpoints for client-side and server-side data flow management.
• Integrate Socketio for live real time updates for both client and server.

Additional Notes:

• This app was hosted on Heroku using Heroku’s free plan. Since Heroku no longer has a free plan, this application is no longer hosted on any services. (Summer 2022)
